A devastating earthquake measuring 7.6 on the Richter scale hit Padang on Indonesia's west Sumatra island on September 30, 2009, causing thousands of casualties and serious damage to infrastructure across the city.
To support post-quake reconstruction and help quake-affected people resume normal production and life, all staff of Bank of China Jakarta Branch (the Branch) donated a total of IDR 26 million. Currently, leaders of the Branch, on behalf of Chinese enterprises in Indonesia, Chinese ambassador to Indonesia Zhang Qiyue, minister-counselor Fang Qiuchen and other leaders arrive at the quake-hit areas to console the people there and hold a donation ceremony for them.
It is reported that during the earthquake relief, supplies and cash donated by Chinese Embassy in Indonesia and Chinese enterprises has amounted to IDR 450 million. Leaders of Chinese Embassy and representatives from Bank of China local branch and other Chinese enterprises also went to Padang Agnes Primary School, M. Djamil Hospital and other institutions to express sympathy and solicitude.
