Distance can never weaken the enthusiasm of over 20,000 Bank of China overseas staff for supporting Sichuan disaster relief. After the earthquake, the overseas institutions promptly took actions to make donations and support the quake victims through various ways.
The donation activities were held at Bank of China London Branch, Canada Branch, Malaysia Branch, Hungary Branch, and Ho Chi Minh City Branch. Led by the management, not only Chinese employees were active in making donations, but the foreign employees in Bank of China overseas institutions who were deeply moved by the Chinese tradition of "concerted relief efforts for victims" also stretched out a helping hand to the disaster stricken area.
To attract more overseas Chinese and warm-hearted foreigners to join the donation, the London Branch, at its own expense, published a donation advertisement titled "Unity is the Strength to Overcome Difficulty" on Sing Tao Daily, the most influential Chinese paper in London. It was the only public service advertisement for Sichuan quake relief in London. On the first day after its publication, donations reached GBP 10,600. Ms. Fu Ying, Chinese ambassador in UK, extended gratitude to Bank of China London Branch for its contribution to the disaster relief.
Federation of Chinese Canadian opened a dedicated account in Bank of China (Canada) to collect donations from Chinese Canadian and communities. Zhou Zaiqun, Vice President of Bank of China head office, who was visiting Bank of China (Canada) Toronto Downtown Branch, encouraged the staff to make unremitting efforts to offer quality services, ensuring that donations were promptly and safely delivered to the disaster area. Zhou also made donations on behalf of his delegation. By the local closing time of May 14, the account had collected CAD 20,000 from individuals.
Under the guidance of the head office, Bank of China overseas branches offered fee-free "Green Channel" remittance services for the disaster relief. Bank of China (Malaysia) Berhad put up announcements in its outlets to inform the public of Sichuan earthquake and provided convenient queue-free, fee-free remittance services to facilitate the donations.
Upon receiving the quake news, Bank of China (Malaysia) Berhad directly contacted the Embassy of the People's Republic of China in Malaysia to set up a dedicated donation account.
While encouraging its staff to make donations, Bank of China (Hungary) published the USD account in its outlets and offered queue-free and fee-free service for the overseas Chinese and foreign friends to donate to Sichuan quake area.
Currently, all the relief efforts of Bank of China overseas institutions are running smoothly.
