Bank of China Maintains Normal Operation to Combat Disasters

2008-02-03

Since mid-January, most areas in the south and southwest of China have suffered from rare extreme weather events, including long-lasting and large-scale low temperature, rain, snow and frost. Paralyzing communication, transportation, coal supply, power supply and oil supply to varying degrees, the disasters pose a threat to Spring Festival transportation and strand many travelers.

On hearing the disasters, Bank of China head office promptly sets up a special task group and holds emergency meetings for disaster relief. Meanwhile, the bank donates RMB 10 million to the disaster areas through the department of civil affairs. The Party Committee, Communist Youth League, and Trade Union of the head office calls on employees to donate, with RMB 413,000 raised on February 1, the first day of the donation organized by the head office.

Branches of Bank of China in the disaster areas set up leadership group and emergency office for disaster relief. All the leaders and employees spare no effort to overcome difficulties and implement emergency plans on power and water supply, network failure, cash escort, fire, traffic accident, and casualty. The branches also command special teams to maintain office buildings, outlets, and ATMs in case of any blockage or leakage caused by frozen power and water supply lines. As the use of electric heating increases, all the offices, outlets and staff dormitories of Bank of China are required to avoid power overloading.

To ensure customer safety, besides cleaning snow and ice in the passages to the outlets, employees of branches in the disaster areas will guide customers in handling their businesses. Warning signs are also placed at slippery areas to prevent accidents. For example, Hubei and Anhui Branches temporarily appoint managers outside the office. With warm greetings of "Welcome", "See you" and "Be careful", they constantly remind customers of the slippery ground and help the elderly in need.

Despite the natural disasters, Bank of China branches have overcome difficulties and provided high-quality financial services. Take the example of Duyun (Guizhou Province), a heavily hit city where both water and power supply are out of service for 6 straight days. Led by the governor, the staff of Duyun Branch make joint efforts day and night to ensure normal operation by emergency power generation. While other branches just keep one outlet in service, Duyun Branch tries its best to keep 5 outlets in smooth operation. Well meeting financial needs of the people in the disaster areas, the bank wins praise from the public. To help repair the damaged grid, Bank of China Guizhou Branch makes an emergency loan of RMB 200 million to China Southern Power Grid Guizhou Power Company through the green channel. In Guangdong Province where many returning passengers are stranded, Bank of China Guangdong Branch calls on its staff to donate clothes and money to the unfortunate in the railway station. As a result, thousands of pieces of winter clothes are delivered to the passengers, along with cookies and mineral water bought by the donated money.

At present, all branches of Bank of China in the disaster areas have basically returned to normal operation. The bank's fight against the disasters still continues. The staff of Bank of China will make greater contribution to disaster relief and recovery, offering high-quality services as usual and making every effort to overcome the disasters along with the nation.
