On January 30, 2008, Bank of China spokesman Wang Zhaowen revealed a donation of RMB 10 million by the Bank to areas hit by low temperature, flood, snow, frost and other extreme weather events seriously affecting people's life and production. The Bank encouraged all of its employees to donate money or materials on a voluntary basis to support the affected people in fighting against the disaster.
Since mid-January, most places in China's south and the eastern part of Northwest China had been exposed to continuous and large-scale extreme weather events which had rarely been seen since the foundation of P. R. China in 1949. As communication and traffic were severely blocked, great difficulties were encountered in coal and oil transmission, power supply, as well as passenger transportation during the spring festival.
Wang Zhaowen said that as a State-owned commercial bank, Bank of China is obliged to help people in disaster-stricken areas tide over difficulties! Recently, the Bank, with a workforce of more than 200,000 at home and abroad, has been paying close attention to the disasters through television, newspapers, broadcast, websites and other media, and to the production and life of the victims. Through the donation, the Bank hopes to extend its solicitude to the sufferers and fulfill the due obligation of a corporate citizen.
