Bank of China Sponsored Beijing Olympic Games

Payment Environment

 

Bank of China provided "one-to-one" outlet services for 37 Olympic competition venues in six co-host cities with nearly 20,000 credit card appointed partners and 773 outlets available for foreign exchange services. The bank increased 80 outlets with obstacle-free services for the disabled, 600 ATMs and 26 self-service banking centers in Beijing as well as four temporary outlets in the Olympic Village, Media Village, Athletes' Village and International Broadcast Center. Bank of China also installed 25 ATMs and 2,000 POS machines in the Olympic Green though cooperation with VISA International.

Bank of China developed the leading online banking platform version 5.0 for corporate customers, and a new online banking platform for individual customers; the 95566 Customer Service Center assigned attendants for Chinese, English, French, Japanese, Spanish and many other language services and provided exclusive advisory services for sales of Olympic tickets, making Bank of China the first financial institution that had launched multi-language telephone banking service at home.

Bank of China updated its IT system to safeguard the payment services during the Olympic Games with a brand-new payment system.

Bank of China provided "one-stop" service for overseas non-resident corporate customers, and set up "green channel" to handle the banking business of overseas individuals temporarily working for the Olympic Games in China.

With the "Olympic temporary account" business, Bank of China became the only domestic financial institution qualified to open temporary accounts for eligible non-resident corporate customers.

Bank of China provided on-site financial services for the "Good Luck Beijing" series of test matches from 2006 to 2007, earning credit from athletes and spectators at home and abroad.

Olympic Products

Bank of China and VISA International jointly issued the first Olympic-themed EUR bank card in Asia and the world's first Olympic credit card themed by Beijing Olympic Games, which were then launched in Hong Kong, Macao and Singapore markets. The bank also launched the world's first set of "Olympic Fuwa Etiquette Deposit Receipts", "Growth with Olympics Accounts", and HKD prepaid card Olympic version in Hong Kong and Macao. All of these products were well-received by customers.

Tickets of Olympic Games

Over 11,000 domestic outlets of Bank of China started to provide application forms for Olympic tickets and collect ticket booking forms submitted by the public through over 1,000 outlets when the Beijing Organizing Committee for the Olympic Games announced the kick-off of ticket sales on April 15, 2007.

By the end of the second phase of ticket booking of the Olympic Games (December 30, 2007), Bank of China, as a convenient and reliable booking channel, had received over 220,000 applications from the public.

Licensed Products

Bank of China opened 200 Olympic licensed retailers in China's mainland, Hong Kong and Macao, and the Macao branch and Bank of China (Hong Kong) Limited were among the first batch of overseas Olympic licensed retailers in the international licensing plan of the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games. The sales of Olympic licensed products had amounted to RMB 370.92 million by the end of 2007.

Olympic Venues

Bank of China and "Beijing Committee of Joint Construction of Beijing Olympic Venues by Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan Compatriots" (the Committee) became the donation partners to jointly build the "Water Cube" (National Aquatics Center). On the strength of its overseas outlets, the Bank provided remittance services for overseas donators with remittance fees exempted or reduced. The Committee office had received donations amounting to RMB 930 million, equivalent to USD 130 million, from over 350,000 compatriots in Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan, and overseas compatriots in 102 countries and regions as of January 2008.

Themed Events

Bank of China has launched various Olympic-themed events for different populations as of the end of 2005: the National Olympic Summer Camp for Youth for two consecutive years; the sponsoring of Olympic Knowledge and Etiquette Contest for College Students; Shanghai Olympic Games Festival, Beijing Olympic Long Walk and Hangzhou Olympic Games Festival for promoting nationwide fitness; themed events in Tianjin for entitling the disabled to Olympic experience; and the "Youth Civilization" events for welcoming the Olympic Games in communities, and so on.

Bank of China organized such activities as the Olympic financial service month and the Olympic financial service skill contest among employees to select Olympic volunteers and spread the Olympic spirit. The bank recognized the year 2008 as the "Olympic Service Year" with a view to enhancing Olympic publicity, strengthening service awareness and improving service quality under the theme of "Serving the Olympics".
